The Hayenga Harold:
Mexico Edition
By: Bailee Hayenga
Here in Mexico, a lot of things are different. The food, the language, and the culture. But one of the things here that is so similar to the United States is their need for God. Many of the people here are Catholic. “ Oh catholic” some of you must be thinking, “ya that’s different from Christianity but if you believe in Jesus and that he loves you and died for you and rose again, I’m sure you can be saved too.” But here Catholicism is a mix of worshiping Mary, the mother of Jesus, the saints, and the Mayan gods. There is a lot of animal sacrifice. Please be praying that the light of God will shine through us.
Also, many parents are sucked into drinking. Just yesterday Shelbi and I, along with Martha, Michael, Kendal, and Kayla (2 girls who are staying with the Fletchers for a month to help them) went and visited a family on the outskirts of Dzan. They are a family of 10, living in a 2 roomed house; the parents are hardly ever around, leaving their 11 year old daughter Yazmin the responsibility of taking care of her 2 older brothers and 5 younger siblings (Julia, Roila, Remi, Angel, and Patricio). The mother, just having a cute little boy (Patricio), is at home now but as soon as the baby can be left with Yazmin she will be gone. It was wonderful to see them so happy when we arrived. Their favorite thing to do is to take pictures! We pulled out our cameras and they all started yelling, “Foto, foto!” (Picture, picture) soon they had taken over our 3 digital cameras and were having the time of their lives snapping photos of each other and us, often cutting off our heads or only getting our hair. They were so pleased! We are planning to return on Saturday to bring food and shoes for Roila, Remi, and Angel.
We are now finally ready to move into our house! The painting is now almost complete. Kayla is painting a beautiful tree design on our wall with some of our favorite bible verses on it. We are sooo excited. Last night we slept in our own house and today we are moving in completely! Praise God!
I apologize for not posting consistently but the internet hasn’t been working very well. We will try to get that fixed.
With love from Mexico,
-Bailee-
